Clubfoot is a congenital (present at birth) condition in which your baby’s foot or feet turn inward. The clubfoot deformity has a tendency to return to its original position (relapse) even after correction. To prevent relapse, the clubfoot must be held in an overcorrected position with bracing. Denis Browne Splint, also known as Denis Browne Boot and Bar Brace or a Foot Abduction Orthosis, is used for maintaining the correction achieved by measures like manipulation, plaster casts, operations etc. Bracing is used only after the foot has been fully corrected.
It consists of two straight-border, high-top, open-toe shoes that are attached to an aluminium bar. The distance between the heels of the shoes is generally kept equal to the width of the baby’s shoulders. SALO Orthotics Denis Browne Splint shoes are made from leather with soft inner lining that are comfortable to the child. The distance between the shoes and the angle can be adjusted as required.
Denis Browne Splint must be worn for the duration as prescribed by the doctor. Generally, the brace is worn for 23 hours a day for 3 months and thereafter worn during naps and at night-time until the child is 4 years old. Most babies settle within a few days of wearing the brace as they become accustomed to the brace and a different way of moving. The use of the brace will not delay a baby’s development in sitting, crawling or walking.
